Advanced Semiconductor Research Lab Launching & MOU With Purdue University

18 November 2025—symbolically aligned with 18A technologyUniversiti Sains Malaysia (USM), through the Collaborative Microelectronic Design Excellence Centre (CEDEC), officially launched the Advanced Semiconductor Research Laboratory, powered by the Intel 18A PDK. This laboratory focuses on developing a fabless ecosystem for AI SoC chip design, specifically for education and research purposes.

The launch ceremony was officiated by the Director General of the Kementerian Pendidikan Tinggi Malaysia (KPT), with a special address delivered by Gary Patton, Vice President of Intel Foundry from Oregon. He highlighted that USM is the first university outside the United States to gain access to this technology—marking a significant milestone in the global semiconductor landscape.

On the same day, USM also formalized an agreement with Purdue University for a Professional Certificate program, which includes R&D collaboration as well as a dual degree program in the semiconductor field.

This initiative aligns with budget support from the Kementerian Pendidikan Tinggi Malaysia (MOHE) to strengthen AI-focused semiconductor education and research at USM. It also serves as a catalyst for the Penang ecosystem as a Southeast Silicon Valley, further positioning Malaysia within the global value chain.

As shared by the Kementerian Pelaburan, Perdagangan dan Industri Malaysia (MITI):
“The greatest technologies begin with the smallest chips.”

The laboratory is now officially secured, with access limited only to approved students and researchers. The journey to establish this lab took nearly two years, as it required multiple layers of approval in compliance with the US CHIPS and Science Act.

Special thanks to the CEDEC team, USM, MOHE, Intel, and Purdue University for their strong commitment in making this laboratory a reality. Appreciation also goes to nearly 204 industry partners who attended and supported this initiative.
